Merino Wool Jerseys

My Retro Cycling Merino wool Jerseys first impression was that the sizing on these is big - I'd ordered a large, as I take large in most other cycle clothing (other than the petite dhb stuff). The large size of this jersey drowned me, and was returned in favour of a medium. This still fits on the large side, but I think part of this is the t-shirt like cut, (not fitted like a modern jersey) and the medium suited me far better (good length, even for my 6'2" frame, and less baggy, although still not as tight as I'd favour in lycra). People with more bulk in chest and arms might that they fill the medium better :wink: As someone who doesn't get on with wool in general (itchy!) I was also pleased to find that the jersey is very comfortable indeed.

I had my doubts about the "antique" features (metal zip, buttoned rear pockets) but found that the zip ran smoothly, and the pockets retained the stuff I carried on the ride (post for the people who used to own our house, and a Montane featherlight jacket) very well.

The ride I tried the jersey out on was a short one (16 miles to drop off the post and then back) but it was a warmish day, and "taking it easy" never seems to figure in my mental list of options, so invariably I sweat a fair bit. With that in mind, I have to say that the claims made for merino were borne out by my experience with this jersey. I felt comfortable throughout the ride, whereas in a synthetic jersey I tend to start off feeling chilly and warm up gradually - didn't feel the need for a gilet when the sun disappeared either. At the end of the ride, the other property of merino (that it doesn't get smelly quickly) was much in evidence - the jersey is back in my wardrobe now, as it genuinely seems not to need washing.

In short, I was very impressed.

Summary:

Pros - cheap compared to other merino jerseys, very comfortable and seems to handle a wider range of temperature than synthetic jerseys. Not stinky :D and not itchy.

We chose long sleeve since that way they can be worn off the bike in the shop or around town. Feel free to ride in it, too.

At Interbike we’ve always had a strong relationship with the Bike Belong Coalition, so Alex and I started talking about doing a commemorative 25th Anniversary Interbike jersey that would benefit the BBC. The jerseys that he sent us as samples are gorgeous and super soft to the touch since they’re made of the latest Merino wool fabrics. You can even machine wash them. Retro Cycling Jerseys to keep you warm in Australia???Thanks to the Australian Tourist Board, most people probably imagine that this is a tropical paradise full of blokes wrestling crocodiles and saying "Crikey!" and "Throw another shrimp on the barbie". In fact we do get winter and occasionally it throws insanity at us - like an inch of rainfall in 40 minutes. As lumps of ice.

Mostly though, it just gets a bit chilly in the early mornings. Seven Celsius at 7am is not unusual, and while that likely doesn't sound cold to those of you who live in the Rockies or Canada, it's the contrast with the 20°C afternoons that's the shock.

For the last few weeks I have been staving off the winter chill with either of these two jerseys, or, on really chilly mornings, both of them. Both use a 50 percent wool, 50 percent acrylic blend that has a nice soft handle and can take being machine-washed on the most gentle cycle, though Capo Forma and De Marchi both say hand washing is preferable.

Both jerseys also have three rear pockets with button closures and distinctly retro styling. The shape is close-fitting but not skintight - Capo Forma calls this a 'club style' fit, and it's certainly preferable for those of us who get out of Lycra shape in the winter.

If it sounds like the two are very similar, well, they are. Sufficiently so that it seems likely they're both in fact made by De Marchi. That's no bad thing, as the Italian clothing maker is known for the quality of its manufacture, and while De Marchi has gone down a very simple route with a plain colour scheme, the Capo Forma version attractively combines coloured panels and embroidered logo and lettering. It looks great, and not just in my opinion; it's had a lot of "ooh, that's a nice jersey" comments on group rides.

But rather more important than their looks is how these jerseys feel. I find that trying to keep warm by piling on layers of synthetic cycling jerseys doesn't work very well. Synthetic jerseys just don't feel good if they get a little sweaty, and the paradox of winter riding is that you want to be warm enough to get just slightly sweaty (or I do anyway). But that sweat has to go somewhere and if it goes into a synthetic jersey it quickly feels cold and clammy.

Not so with these jerseys. Wool absorbs water into the fibers rather than having it wick over the surface. That means that a slightly damp wool-mix jersey still feels cosy. That's perfect for a rolling ride like my regular commute, where you build up a head of stem on the climbs, but can get chilly very easily on the descents.

It's also perfect for a damp Tuesday evening after a hailstorm. A few brave, hardy or just foolish souls were apparently seen riding in the hail, but I waited till it had subsided and headed out on to roads that were still wet and, in some places, dusted with hail.

Not having fenders, I got damp. But with both jerseys on I was plenty warm. The air temperature was 13°C and the damp meant it felt colder. A nylon vest over the top kept off the wind chill and the Capo Forma and De Marchi jerseys' wool/acrylic mix kept me toasty.

Spring has begun to threaten to arrive here in the last few days, and that's shown up another positive aspect of these jerseys: versatility. Because the fabric is a slightly open knit, the jerseys are comfortable on their own even when things warm up a bit. Sunny afternoons in the low 20s are no problem.

Both jerseys have withstood a few machine-washes (I'm far too lazy to hand-wash things) and the only problem that's thrown up has been a bit of dye-run in the Capo Forma jersey. However, that was almost certainly my own fault for not taking it out of the machine straight away. Oops.

Another advantage of wool is that it doesn't need washing as often anyway. I've been able to get away with three or four days' consecutive use of these jerseys without them getting smelly. A similar stunt with synthetic jerseys would leave them in no fit state to sit on my desk as I write this review. My colleagues would hound me out of the office.

In all, I'm very impressed with these jerseys. With cooler weather approaching in the northern hemisphere, they're well worth considering as additions to your winter wardrobe.

Retro Cycling jerseys Image Apparel

Retro Image Apparel moved its Cycling Jerseys operation this winter from Chicago to Portland's inner Southeast industrial area.

The company's trademark is vintage art, from sophisticated cycling posters to Betty Boop. But the recent relocation already inspired a spinoff venture: microbrew jerseys. Company founder Roger Mallette sees a common denominator.

"These jerseys allow people to illustrate what they think is cool," he says. "It's wearable art."

Seven years ago, Mallette worked as an inter-generational learning coordinator at a Seattle school. Entranced by a book about the legendary Bauhaus design school in Germany, he decided to start making T-shirts. His company launched with $250 in capital and a bedroom for an office.

Before long, Mallette went full-time with his new venture and switched his focus to cycling jerseys.

Early successes piled up. Mallette got rights to use images from the famed Horton Collection of cycling memorabilia. REI started selling his gear, and Bicycling magazine featured the company.

Mallette began to aggressively pursue licensing agreements, guided by his artistic tastes -- and, sometimes, his whims. When he moved to Chicago in 2006 to be closer to Midwestern relatives, he noticed a billboard for Black Cat Fireworks during the cross-country drive. Soon that art, too, graced Retro Image Apparel jerseys.

In Chicago, Mallette developed a Cat in the Hat bicycle safety program for children. And he reached a record $560,000 in gross sales in 2007.

But Mallette missed the West Coast, and when he considered a move, Portland came to mind. During his years in Seattle, he'd often head south to spend a day reading in the coffee shop at Powell's City of Books.

Portland also offered another perk. "This is the epicenter of cycling," Mallette says.

He arrived in December and set up shop in a 4,000-square-foot space near the eastern foot of the Hawthorne Bridge, which he shares with bicyclinghub.com. The office is less than a mile's commute (by bicycle, of course) from his home in Southeast Portland, and has room for a retail store if he decides to pursue the idea.

For now, distributors sell Retro Image Apparel worldwide. But customers can also buy directly at www.retroimageapparel.com -- about $80 for a men's jersey, $75 for a women's jersey. And, as it turns out, Mallette already had fans in Portland.

Waterfront Bicycles, for example, started carrying Retro Image Apparel a few years ago.

"I got tired of the selection everywhere being the standard, dayglow-yellow, boring stuff," says Eric Roden, manager of the downtown shop. "The fact that these were based on vintage art pieces really appealed to me. With Portland being such an artistic town, it made a lot of sense."

Meeting the owner this winter was a bonus, Roden says. Since moving to town, Mallette stopped in to have his bike worked on and talk shop with the Waterfront Bicycles crew.

Mallette recently signed off on a deal to make jerseys from vintage covers of The New Yorker, and started a sister company: Micro Beer Jerseys. Mallette got the idea at a Christmas party, where he noticed a striking tap handle for Coney Island Lager. The line will officially launch this spring with jerseys for several brewers, including Portland's Lucky Labrador Brewing Co.

Gary Geist, co-owner of the Lucky Lab, has rejected proposals to license the company's art for dog collars, biscuits and other merchandise.But he was impressed by Mallette's pitch, and he liked the idea of gaining exposure in Cycling shops outside Oregon. Plus, he expects the Retro Jerseys to sell well locally (they're already available at Lucky Lab pubs).

"It's a merging of two very Portland things," Geist says. "Portland's a very bike-friendly city. And it's the microbrew capital of the world."
