The first thing that makes the difference when it comes to short climbings is whether you keep a constant pace or not. Try to be smart about everything when you approach a hill. Keep a constant pace when you get to the base of the climbing, but try to keep it constant during the climbing as well. If you consider that you are losing the momentum, change the gear and remain constant. This way, you will feel the difference.
Then, you should find the right pace for you. There are a lot of climbings which cannot be done if you keep a constant pace and if you keep the flat speed. Find the ideal pace and change the gears in such a way that you stay around the same pace. This pace will make you feel natural and comfortable. Don't try to steal anyone else's style or pace. We are all unique and we need to discover our own pace, which then increases as time goes by.
Don't stop at the end of a climbing. There will be times when you won't feel able to move for another ten metres. You will feel as if you had led in your shoes and you will be tempted to cry out for a break. However, don't stop. A break only makes your muscle contract and your blood doesn't clean your body up anymore. Just pedal pretty fast and your muscle will relax, the body recovering very quickly.
Last but not least, exercise. It doesn't matter if the climbing is inclined or not. Just use any opportunity you have in order to gain experience. It is a lot easier to be successful on a small hill than on a mountain.
